Podcast – RuneScape Road Trip

Listen to our latest podcast now – where brave wayfarers Mod Moltare and Mod Matthe meet at the crossroads to discuss the RuneScape Road Trip.

You can also follow our official podcasts on PodBean or iTunes.

What is a Behind the Scenes article?

Behind the Scenes is a sneak peek at the planned game updates that we hope to launch in the coming month.

This, however, is only a plan – not a promise – that a particular update will be released in a particular way or at a particular time. To get you the highest quality updates as quickly as possible, we usually keep on tweaking and testing right up until the moment before release, so sometimes things change or take a bit longer than expected. We aren’t afraid to change our plan if necessary, as we will never launch an update before it is ready.

Block N Load – our block-building FPS – has left beta and hit Steam as a full release!

Runescape: Controls

RuneScape has a very effective and efficient control system. Once you learn the various aspects of the system, using it becomes second nature.

Mouse Controls

Every single task in RuneScape can be accomplished using the mouse. To perform the default action associated with an item, move the mouse pointer over it and click the ‘action’ button. This is the left button on a two-or-more button mouse, or the button on an one-button mouse and then select the first option from the menu.

When you request for an action to be performed, a red cross will briefly appear to indicate that the request was received. You may have to wait a few moments for your character to perform the action.

Hover Information

3By hovering your mouse over something in-game, your cursor will change. For example, your cursor will change into a hand if you can use something, or it will change into a sword if you can attack it.

These icons indicate the actions that will be performed by default when you click on the object you have highlighted with your mouse. As well as the cursor changing, a pop-up will display information the name of this action.

Attackable monsters will display an additional pop-up which contains their name, life point total, level and weakness.

Right-Click Menu

33Items and objects in RuneScape have multiple actions associated with them. To view and select an alternative to the default action of an item or object, a player using a multiple button mouse should click the right mouse button, while the mouse pointer is over the item or object. A menu of other actions that can be performed on that item or with the item will be displayed. Single button mouse users are always shown this menu of options.

Traversing RuneScape can be achieved by using your mouse. For single-button mice, move the mouse to where you want to go and click the button. For mice with two or more buttons, move where you want to go and click the left mouse button. how to move.gif

If this is done correctly, your character will start moving and a small yellow ‘X’ will flash briefly on the spot where your character will stop.

You can run to a spot by holding the ‘CTRL’ key on your keyboard before clicking where you wish to move.

If you wish to move around quickly, you can set your character to run for as long as they have energy. This feature can be turned on through the option tab, or by clicking the run energy globe next to the minimap.

The world map view shows a large map of the entirety of RuneScape. On the map you will see the cities and information icons for specific locations, buildings and quest starting points.

Once the world map is loaded, you can view any area of the world map by clicking and holding down the left mouse button, and then dragging the mouse. Release the mouse button to stop scrolling once the desired area comes into view. You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move your view of the world map.

Keyboard Controls

The keyboard is mostly used to enter text in the chat box in order to trade or talk to other players. It is also used for shortcuts to various actions. There are several short cuts that your keyboard can offer, allowing you to open or close interfaces quickly, or activate abilities via your Action Bar.

The majority of these keys can be rebound in the controls interface.

The camera determines your viewing angle into the game. You can adjust it using the arrow keys on your keyboard.

The left arrow key rotates the camera view clockwise, while the right arrow key rotates the camera view anti-clockwise.

To adjust the viewing height of the camera, press the up arrow key to tilt the camera downwards or the down arrow key to tilt the camera upwards.

Note that there are secondary controls that can be changed from the controls interface.

Chatting in RuneScape is a major part of the game and you’ll find that there are many ways to keep in touch with your friends, organise trades or interact with other players. You can chat to those around you simply by typing into the chat box or by using the Quick Chat feature.

The chat box at the bottom of the game window shows you any messages you send or receive. If you find yourself being sent a lot of messages, you might find it useful to adjust what types of message you want to receive.

333The nine buttons along the bottom of the RuneScape screen control how you interact with the chat system.

The first eight buttons are chat controls that can be left-clicked, and will cause the chat box to only display the selected information/chat. These buttons can also be right-clicked, giving you a set of options to restrict whether or not you will receive those types of messages at all.

The flag icon, when clicked, displays the Report Abuse window, allowing you to report players who are in breach of the Rules of RuneScape.

Runescape: Makeover Guide

One of the more interesting features of RuneScape is the ability to give your character a makeover. If you decide that you would rather like a new set of clothes, a different haircut or a better tan, the good people of RuneScape are here to help.

If, on the other hand, you’d prefer to do it yourself, you could try building a house. Some of the items that you can construct in your bedroom enable you to change your appearance.

The Hairdresser’s Salon

2The Hairdresser lives in Falador and can be found by keeping an eye out for his spinning, candy-striped barber’s pole. He will gladly remodel your hair into the latest fashion, as well as providing a colour treatment. Of course, his skills are not limited to cutting the hairs on top of your head: he is fully trained in the art of beard trimming.

Asking for a hair cut will bring up the appearance interface where you will be able to pick your style and colouring. Note that, as well as hair options, men will be able to pick from different beard styles.

To change your hair or beard, select both the design and the colour you like and click the X in the top right corner. Most haircuts are free, and men – whose hairstyles are simpler – can also have their facial hair redesigned with every haircut, but some hair styles and beard designs are only available through Solomon’s General Store.

If you change your mind and decide that you are actually quite pleased with your original hair or beard, simply click cancel in the bottom right corner.

Thessalia’s Fine Clothes

22Thessalia is a long-standing resident of Varrock, with a history of supplying clothes to some of the city’s finest citizens. Rather than simply covering your clothes with armour and robes to disguise your fashion mistakes of the past, you may prefer to have Thessalia remodel your wardrobe. For free, she will work on your upper body, hands and legs.

To change your clothes – either for your upper body, hands or legs – select both the design and the colour you like and click the “Free!” button. Note that your upper body may have both the body and arms redesigned. If you change your mind and decide that you are actually quite pleased with your clothes as they are, simply click the X in the top right corner.

The Make-over Mage

2222The Make-over Mage is one of the strangest characters you might encounter, and without peer in RuneScape, he – or she – is the only man – or woman – capable of changing either your gender or your skin colour. If you ever feel the urge to experience the other side of the gender divide, or to change your suntan, then the Make-over Mage’s excellent all-in-one service is certainly for you. For the sum of 3,000 coins you can engage his – or her – talents and emerge from his – or her – house as a completely new person.

To change your gender click on one of the two portraits; by default this is set to your current gender. To change your skin colour select the colour you like from the bar in the middle of the window. Make sure you have chosen both your gender and your skintone before clicking ‘Confirm’: the Make-over Mage is friendly, but not noted for giving out refunds. Changing either or both of these will cost 3,000 coins. If you change your mind and decide that you are actually quite pleased with your body as it is, simply click the X in the top right corner.

Photo Booth

222222The photo booth is located right near the Make-over Mage’s house. Through the power of its magic you’ll be able to take a snapshot of how you look – whatever you’re wearing/wielding and how you look at the time – and display that snapshot next to any posts you make on the forums. For more information on the photo booth, its location and how to use it, see the main Photo Booth article.

A photo booth is also available to members in the dungeons of Daemonheim. Click here to find out more about constructing photo booths.

Yrsa’s Shoe Store

2222222Yrsa’s Shoe Store in the far northern settlement of Rellekka sells boots in a delightful variety of colours and styles. For free, Yrsa will craft you a new pair of shoes to your specifications.

Note, however, that Yrsa’s shoemaking talents are open only to those who have completed the The Fremennik Trials quest. As this quest is for members, and in a members’ area, only members will be able to have their shoes redesigned.

To change your shoes, select the colour and style you like and click the “Free!” button. If you change your mind and decide that you are actually quite pleased with your shoes as they are, simply click the X in the top right corner.

Reinald’s Smithing Emporium

222222222In the dwarven city of Keldagrim, deep beneath the mountains that the trolls call home, Reinald smiths the finest silver and gold armguards available in RuneScape. For 500 coins Reinald will craft you a new pair of armguards in the the design of your choice, in either silver or gold.

Note that you must have at least started The Giant Dwarf to gain access to Reinald’s services.

To change your armguards select the design and material you like and click the thumbs-up icon. Changing your armguards will cost 500 coins. If you change your mind and decide that you are actually quite pleased with your armguards as they are, simply click the X in the top right corner.
