RuneScape: Getting Started

Creating an Account

Getting started in RuneScape is a quick and easy process. Within a few minutes you can create an account and start playing the game!

You can create a new account by clicking ‘Play Now’, either on the splash page or on the main website. Depending on which link you click will slightly adjust your account creation process.

Splash Page

9Clicking on the ‘Play Now’ will send you to the account creation form.

Enter your age and your email address (this is important – it is how you log in to the game and acts as a way for us to reset your password). Then choose a password.

Each of these fields will get a tick when they have been completed. If there is an error, a cross will show and a message will show indicating what you need to do.

You can also choose to create an account using your Facebook details if you’d prefer.

To continue the accountcreation process, load up your RuneScape client, and login with your newly created account. Enter your login details and press ‘Log In’. From here you will then be taken to the character creation process.

When you are happy with your character’s look, press ‘done’ to launch your character into the game to begin the tutorial.

Main Page

999You can create a new account by clicking ‘Play Now’, or by clicking ‘create a new account’. As this is your first time to RuneScape, you’ll be asked to pick from downloading our client, or playing through our Java client (if you installation of java is not up-to-date, you may be given the option to update your java installation).

Once you have chosen your client you will be taken to the login screen. Note that for those using the Java client you may be asked for permission to find the best graphical options for your computer. This will only take a minute or so, and will create the optimal RuneScape experience for your computer specifications. The HTML5 client will ask you for permission to store content on your computer. This is so that the game will load faster. You will need to accept this before you can continue.

To start the account creation process, click ‘Create Free Account’ at the bottom of the screen to go to the character creation screen.

When you’re done creating a character, you get to choose your character’s name and decide what details you will use to log in to RuneScape.

Firstly, enter your character’s name: the name that all other players will see when you log into the game. You can use the ‘randomise’ button to choose a random name that isn’t in use.

Enter your age and your email address (this is important – it is how you log in to the game and acts as a way for us to reset your password). Then choose a password.

Each of these fields will get a tick when they have been completed. If there is an error, a cross will show and a message will show indicating what you need to do.

The character creation interface presents a wide variety of hair, skin colour and outfit options for your character and there are tabs along the top of the interface allowing you to navigate through these options.

If you don’t mind what your character looks like, pressing the ‘randomise’ button beneath the character preview will choose a design for you. Press it again to get another random choice. Later, you may pay some characters in-game to change your look. See the Makeover Guide to read about changing your look in-game.

The opening event is where some friendly and not-so-friendly citizens of Gielinor await you. Each step of the way you will be given a task to perform. If you get lost, an arrow will be beneath your feet to show you the direction you should be going and another arrow will show the location of your target or destination on your minimap. Between yourself and your target there will also be a breadcrumb trail so you don’t have to refer to your map if you do not want to.

If you’re looking for more details on the game’s basic features, see the Beginners’ Guide.

Other Ways to Play

For more experienced players we would recommend the Java client over our downloadable client. For Java, you will need to install the Java plugin for your browser.

Note that for those using the Java client you may be asked for permission to find the best graphical options for your computer. This will only take a minute or so, and will create the optimal RuneScape experience for your computer specifications.

We also offer an HTML5 client which is currently in beta. Those with high-end PCs may like to try this version. HTML5 offers more features it offers over Java such as an increased draw distance, dynamic lighting and shadows and a broader colour palette.

For HTML5, you do not need any additional plugins, but you must be using the Google Chrome internet browser. The HTML5 client will ask you for permission to store content on your computer. This is so that the game will load faster. You will need to accept this before you can continue.
